We are Storm Surge, a student-led FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team from Seaford, VA. We take on the annual challenge of designing, building, and programming a robot to compete in an international competition that brings together innovation, technology, and teamwork.
Through this experience, our students learn hands-on skills in engineering, machining, computer science, business, media, and leadership, preparing the next generation of STEM innovators. Students learn how to conduct themselves professionally, We also strive to share our passion by hosting outreach events, mentoring younger students, and promoting STEM education throughout our community.
Like the surge of a powerful storm, our energy and innovation drive us forward as we collaborate, compete, and inspire others in our community to explore the wonders of STEM.
FAQs
What is Storm Surge?
We’re Storm Surge, a high school team competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)—an international STEM program where students design, build, and program industrial-sized robots to complete challenging tasks. Each year’s game is completely new, so we’re always ready to weather the storm and build something incredible.
What is FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)?
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a global organization that combines the excitement of sports with the creativity of science and technology. In FRC, teams of high school students have just 6–8 weeks to brainstorm, prototype, design, and build a robot — all while learning teamwork, leadership, and real-world problem-solving.
Why the name “Storm Surge”?
Because when we compete, we bring the energy! Like a surge of power and motion, our team represents momentum, teamwork, and the unstoppable force of innovation. Plus, we love a good storm pun!
Who can join the team?
Anyone in 8-12th grade who’s curious about robotics, technology, or teamwork! You don’t need any prior experience—just a willingness to learn, collaborate, and get your hands a little dirty!
What skills can I learn on the team?
Plenty!
- Engineering & Design – CAD, manufacturing, 3D printing, assembly, electrical layout, and more
- Programming – Java, control systems, sensors, and vision tracking
- System Design – Electric motors, pneumatics, and robot power management
- Media & Marketing – Graphic design, social media, photography, and outreach
- Team Management – Leadership, project management, and public speaking
It takes a village to build a robot. There’s always a role for you somewhere in the storm.
When does the season happen?
We work year-round, so it is always a good time to join the surge!
Our “build season” officially kicked off January 10th, 2026, when FIRST released the new game challenge. We spent about ten weeks designing, building, and testing our robot before competitions began in March. For the rest of the year, we will be focusing on skills workshops, outreach, fundraising, and off-season events (and maybe catching up on sleep).
Do I need any experience to join?
Not at all! We’ll teach you everything you need to know. Our mentors are here to help you learn to ride the waves, whether you’re wiring your first circuit or making your first cut on the bandsaw.
How can local businesses support us?
Sponsorships, donations, and materials all help us keep the storm going! Your support helps cover robot parts, competition fees, and outreach projects. In return, we’ll proudly feature your logo on our robot, shirts, website, and event banners. (It’s great exposure, and you get to say you helped build a robot!)
